What’s spherical, is about the size of a small softball, grows on trees, and is just yummy happiness? You got it! ORANGES! Here in Riverside, we are so blessed to have access to fresh oranges. In fact, many residences have a tree or two growing in their yard. Don’t have a tree? Simply drive down scenic Victoria Avenue and look for a local farm or homes that sell their oranges curbside. How convenient is that now with the current stay-at-home orders!
An all-time favorite way to enjoy oranges is to have a daily dose of freshly-squeezed orange juice. An 8-ounce glass of orange juice offers a concentrated source of Vitamin C with 67% of the Reference Daily Intake (RDI) and is high in folate, potassium, and antioxidants! Because the body does not naturally produce Vitamin C, drinking a glass of orange juice is a delicious way to get it! The recommended daily amount of Vitamin C for adults is 65 – 90 milligrams (mg) a day, with the upper limit at 2000 mg a day.
Not into orange juice? No problem! There are other ways to get your daily dose of Vitamin C! You can find Vitamin C in foods such as potatoes (hmm... French Fries?), spinach, peppers, broccoli, citrus fruits, berries, and tomatoes. Vitamin C supplements can be found at your nearest health food store. But if you’re like me and just LOVE orange juice, tap into that creative self and experiment by mixing freshly-juiced veggies and/or fruits with freshly-squeezed oranges. With the warm weather approaching, orange juice can help you quench that thirst, is super yummy, and offers amazing benefits at the same time!
